MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL: BEFORE & AFTER

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, how do I make my walls look tall? Mirrors are an important element in decorating. They function to reflect light, opening spaces and creating new balance to any room. When I shop for a mirrors, I look for textured framing, unusual shapes, a mixture of contemporay and traditional frames, and unusual combinations. Sometimes a collection of small mirrors can take the place of one statement mirror, while other times there’s only one.

I found this mirror at an antique center in Stamford, CT. I loved the size and the metal framing. Inside the workroom at Tiger Lily’s Greenwich, I peeled back some of the heavy paint with an electric sander. It gave me new color tones and allowed for different shading to peek through. I finished the frame with a clear varnish. It now hangs in a client’s front foyer creating an amazing openess to the space while giving everyone one last chance to look in the mirror before heading out the door!Image

BEFORE & AFTER: SUPER SOFA

BEFORE & AFTER: SUPER SOFA

ImageI found these sofas at a resale shop. Shopping with new upholstery in mind lets you open your mind to new possibilites. I liked the price and potential in these Pottery Barn frames. Underneath the slip covers there piece had clean bones.

Pictured above is the after. I chose to remove all the floppy cushions and recreate the piece in the Tiger Lily’s workroom with a tight back and single loose seat. I added decorative welt and buttons to the seat for a more custom design. The fabric is linen with a beautiful brown mohair welt and button tuft. Once in the store went to town stripped the old fabric, added a grayish-wash on the wood and reupholstered in a beautiful gray-white linen from the Italian textile house Telafina.
