BEFORE & AFTER: I BREAK FOR YARD SALES: SITTIN’ PRETTY

I BRAKE FOR YARD SALES
AIRS @gactv

I Brake For Yard Sales is an amazing premise. It stands for value, saving and preserving what is good and old in american furniture today. Anything can be salvaged. Recycling is one strong way to save the earth. Lara Spencer my dear friend believes that. Samantha Knapp and Tiger Lily’s do too.

“A Society is defined not only by what it creates but by what it refuses to destroy”— John Sawhill,  CEO of The Nature Conservancy and the 12th President of New York University

FAMILY VINTAGE

This is how we found it at Irv & Alexis’ house. It was a classic hand-me-down. I like to think I know every piece of furniture’s story but memory only half the time serves me. I think this belonged to Irv’s aunt. There was a pair of these love seats. It sits two, so people get to be close. That’s where the love comes from. The frame is real wood and the legs are carved. . The cushion Lara is testing out is all down and feather.

UPHOLSTERY CHANGES EVERYTHING
http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com

It really had to be kept. We brought to the Tiger Lily’s workroom. Tiger Lily’s is located at 154 Prospect Street and on line at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. We are the only family run white glove upholstery studio of our kind. We still do it local. We still sit near by. We are not cheap. Everything you do well is an investment. Just think about that. Everything is done on site and under my eye.It was my call to upholster over the frame. The team together chose the gray paint wash. The fabric is by Robert Allen. All the fabrics we used on that episode were as well.

REVEAL GREAT AMERICAN COUNTRY

AFTER:

We can talk cost here. After you take the car off the lot, it depreciates. It dramatically looses value in the next two-to-three operating years. It is why people heavily weigh the decision to buy or lease.  You buy the furniture or someone in your family did. That is where your value starts. If someone had amazing taste or you now do, immediately what you own is better then Restoration Hardware. I am sorry to knock big box brands, but it is true. There are times when you pay more than 30% above commercial retail. There are times you pay less. Custom has its own industry numbers. If you shop there you have to appreciate that.

MORE TO COME
WATCH @gactv

More happens on this episode, including a barely make it moment with the reveal drapes. I fight with Bob. Lara tries to calm the waters. All because the drapes weren’t ready in time. I knew that before I started  my jog that morning. That’s why I am helping in my running shoes. Watch, listen and learn I say. That was the experience I had on I Brake For Yard Sales. I happily share it with you!

BEFORE & AFTER: 2013 SEASON’S GREETINGS FROM TIGER LILY’S GREENWICH

 SEASON’S GREETINGS FROM TIGER LILY’S

Image

THE ROAD TO NO WHERE
THE ROAD TO NOW HERE
http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com

In the lyrics of the Road To No Where from the Talking Heads, there’s a city on the mind. My road is not a street with no name, it is a trail near my home. It is the one less traveled.  Henry David Thoreau also says on Walden:

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” ― Henry David Thoreau.

Image

TIP FOR 2014
FIND A CENTER POINT

Thoreau understood life goes on. It is prepetually in motion.  The earth spins on axis, There is something huge to be said for that. Look for the color in the mundane. .

Tips for 2014:

1.Find a Center Point.

2. Live clearly. See things newly and differently.

3. Pay it back to the Universe.

Image

TIP FOR 2014
SEE THINGS NEWLY & DIFFERENTLY

In the middle of each blog I sell the store. That’s the goal of http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. We are a lifestyle brand that sells a one-of-a-kind experience. The product we create, be it your window treatments to the actual skelton of your home. Again hard sell here, we have expanded into building and renovation work. TIP 2014
LOOK AT YOUR OWN REFLECTION
LIKE WHAT YOU SEE

The end of the year is all about the reflection. It is the water, life’s blood and the looking glass. You have to look back and be proud and happy about the course of events that unfolded for you in 2013. The river runs deep and layers upon layers are built in years.  The year was a captured in furniture, friends, television opportunities, magazine publications, blog posts, lecture series, art and a celebration of design.

TIP 2014
BE PREPARED TO BE AMAZED BEYOND EXPECTATIONS

I cooked, I became an amateur photographer and I read. There’s a note in the woods near where I live that expains the story behind those brillant red berries. It turns out they are poisonous.  In the Grimm’s fairytale Snow White, she eats a bad apple. It is as simple as that. Disney’s  imagination takes that idea to market and its no wonder we all can conjure up the image of a wicked witch as her own mirror image reflecting, if she is fair. I don’t thing now’s the moment for a good verse evil speech, but I will leave you with one quote as I always do. It is an idea really, to look deeply inside and be your best self.

“Prepare to be amazed beyond all expectations. After all it is what I do“–Magic  Mirror, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Thank you all for reading. Happy 2014. May we all met again here same place same time in 2014.

BEFORE & AFTER: THE GIVING TREE

BEFORE & AFTER: THE GIVING TREE

BEFORE: Enchanted Forrest Tree

BEFORE’
LACKLUSTER
THE GIVING TREE

Life happens and before you know it, the things you meant to get yesterday are a week’s time into the future. I had planned to write this blog on Monday, before that right after this tree delivered to Enchanted Forest in late November. The holidays come hard and fast. So move quickly and enjoy every moment.  The opportunity to show people you love them exists everywhere.

BEFORE:

This is the giving tree. It is one of dozens that decked-the-hall of the Hyatt for the Greenwich Junior League’s “Enchanted Forest.”  Money raised goes to the charities the Junior League cares about. I care about that. Giving is the first part of the lesson. You give, you receive. It is that simple.

The tree comes in a box and with it an opportunity for the ultimate use of your imagination. It begs the question what does the holiday mean to you? How can you express that in the decoration of a tree.

BEFORE: Peace Garland

THIS HOLIDAY
GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

Tradition says Romans, Egyptians and even Babylonians brought in their various species of evergreen trees to signify that come springtime, life would return to the winterized lands. Germans are credited with popularizing the modern day version of the tree in the 16th century. Christians would bring trees into their homes and light them with candles.

The most popular trees are: Scots Pine, Easter White Pine, White Spruce and Colorado which have the longest needles.  Ours was plastic. I used that to my advantage and added more plastic to it! The peace symbols came from #Party City in Port Chester.

AFTER: "A Very Grateful Christmas"

A VERY GRATEFUL CHRISTMAS
JUNIOR LEAGUE’S ENCHANTED FOREST

This holiday, give peace a chance. That’s all I am sayin’ 🙂  It is the overall theme of the tree. “A Very Grateful Christmas,” by Tigerlilysgreenwich.com. The 2013 tree dates back to the 1960s peace movement. The backdrop was music. One of which the Grateful Dead. One tour they played drums over 1,400 times (http://www.setlist.fm/stats/grateful-dead-bd6ad4a.html) , covered their lead two songs Playing in the Band & Not Fade Away over 600 times. The first time they played my favorite song, Box of Rain, was at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco on October 9th 1972.

“It’s just a box of rain. I don’t know who put it there. Believe it if you need it or leave it if you dare. And it’s just a box of rain or a riboon for your hair. Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there”

AFTER: "A Very Grateful Christmas"

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
BOX OF RAIN

I put everything I could think of on the tree to give it an authentic feel. Flowers and granola bars were a natural touch. The rest is a combination of store bought items and a few we hand made. When you are looking to do something different, artistic and authentic use my favorite rule:

1.Opposites Attract

To sides balance the scale.   Always look to balance the yin to the yang. In this case it’s fake tree with the real elements.  Jerry Garcia himself is quoted as saying, ” I mean, just because you’re a musician doesn’t mean all your ideas are about music.” Look for more then what you think is destiny for yourself. See beyond clouds. There is always sun.

AFTER: "A Very Grateful Christmas"

THE IDEAS ARE FREE.
THE EXECUTION COST MONEY.
http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com

On the subject of the sun or gold anyway, here come my sell. Tigerlilysgreenwich.com is all custom. It is one-of-a-kind. It is hand-crafted in an era of mass production. Spend with us and I stay in business.

BEFORE: Enchanted Forrest Tree Skirt Design

TIGER LILY’S WORK ROOM
154 PROSPECT STREET, GREENWICH CT

Our artisans  hand-sewed the Christmas tree skirt. Tiger Lily’s can do anything you can ask for. It is all produced by one-family.  The Knapps.  If you go to the store 154 Prospect Street, you can ask for anyone of us by name. We are proud of that.

AFTER: "A Very Grateful Christmas"

AFTER:

“And the tree was happy” That’s Shel Silverstein. If you know the book, you know that tree loved a boy very very much-even more then she loved herself. That is the thing about love. You have to do it like you mean and like it means the world to you.

This Christmas, beyond religion see the trees, the lights, the presents as symbols of love, peace, graditude and possibility. The truth is you can do that at any time and any where. Still, it is never a better time to believe in the magic and spirit of christmas.

AFTER: "A Very Grateful Christmas"

AT AUCTION
MONEY RAISED GOES TO CHARITY

I end every blog on a quote and today is no different for this Jewish girl who believes in Christmas.

“And it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!”

CHINOISERIE CABINET
PERFECT “AS-IS”

BEFORE:

I like the idea that a object and a person can be considered perfect “as-is.” We are talking no change, just look at the piece recognize its value. See a scratch or a paint chip as character not an imperfection. I found this piece at a dealer’s warehouse in Fairfield. Case-goods for the record are not high in commodity. It makes them cheap. Buy Now 🙂  I love the toile-style detail.

AFTER:
PERFECT “AS-IS”
STYLED AT HOME IN LONNY.COM

AFTER:

I didn’t change anything about this piece. Its image, “as-is” was published in November’s Lonny Magazine. I just found its perfect home. Saddled between two windows and holding vintage blooming 70s lamps. Tiger Lily’s is a bloom after all. I will plug now, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com.  A rock-solid sketch of a lady, skull and some booze round out the cabintry.  I found the perfect marriage of style with the detail on the cabinets and the toile drapes.

Marriages are love. May we all have that in this lifetime.

Confucius said, “It is easy to hate and it is difficult to love. This is how the whole scheme of things works. All good things are difficult to achieve; and bad things are very easy to get.” Confucius said that when he was alive somewhere in the period between 551 BC – 479 BC. This before and after is long past that time, but it makes sense in modern day.

Love what is in front of you and appreciate what it gives. It opens life up to a series of before & afters that you can live with.

BEFORE & AFTER: BEHIND THE SCENES FRENCH STYLE CHAIRS

BEFORE &  AFTER: BEHIND THE SCENES  FRENCH CHAIRS

IMG_6422

HGTV aired, Tiger Lily’s approved! We love being part of Lara Spencer’s ” I Brake For Yard Sales,” team and watched like all the other viewers as the pieces we helped put together came to life in the homes of two deserving families on the debut episode friday Oct. 4th. If you didn’t see it, watch for repeats!  Lara coined me the “fabric guru” which actually made me laugh because I can recall pouring over prints and colors in a bid to bring what’s old back to new again. So here it goes:

BEFORE:

We started with the family’s wood framed, french styled bergere chair. They were well-worn and featured the original and at one time popular silk check with a goldish faux wood finish. The pair had a loose cushion and loose back.

BEFORE:
TRADITIONAL CHAIRS IN ORIGINAL FABRIC

We decided on a neutral print for new upholstery. I especially liked the concept of bringing a print into a room for this family.  Husband and wife were looking for a neutral palette to  create a new classic look that could go the distance as styles and trends change. The ferns were a perfect pick to satisfy all the points on our check list.

Image

NEW FABRIC
NEW LOOK

To save on the expense of the fabric, we changed the back of the chair to be a tight back. This new look came out of the consideration to save some cost on the price of fabric but also added decorative value.  The beauty of bringing a older piece to our workroom, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, is that we can make small changes to existing pieces that are not only decorative but cost effective.

Image

CHANGED TIGHT BACK
FRAME WHITE WASHED

We left the seat cushion alone and worked with the existing fabric to make a matching border on the seat. The entire frame is finished with a fresh white wash to remove all the dated golden hues that were once a focal point of the chair.

Image

LOOSE SEAT CUSHION
ADDS COMFORT

AFTER:

The outcome is remarkable. We were able to transform what looked like a tired and dated living room chair to one that was inviting and fresh both in color and print. The reveal on this one is ten times more exciting on the show “I Brake For Yard Sales.”

MANUEL CANOVAS
SAMIRA

At a time when everyone wants neutrals, solids or go a bit bolder to textured solids, it nice to see a collection of fabrics that pushes patterns, color and textures. Manuel Canovas dates back to 18th century France. This year’s collection re-interpretes classic designs and tastes in a contemporary way.

SQUARE ARM CLUB CHAIR
SOLID FABRIC REMOVED

BEFORE:

Given the opportunity to reupholster a client’s existing club chair, we decided to move away from a solid neutral linen to showcase the “Samira” from the new Manuel Canovas collection. The fabric is a cotton linen base with a silk thread embroidery.

Image

SEWING SEAMS TO MATCH

With a big print, you have to pick the areas where you want to match the seams. I like to start with the main part of the pattern in the center of the chair and work out from the center like an umbrella.   When it comes to match, it is important to get the front of the chair first. Here the cushion matches to the platform.

Image

AFTER:
FULL PATTERN CLUB CHAIR

AFTER: I love the way this chair turned out. The scale of the pattern is bold and says a lot about the person who lives with it. Deepak Chopra said, “A person is a pattern of behavior, of a larger awareness.” This chair is perfect for that person 🙂
