BEFORE & AFTER: I BREAK FOR YARD SALES: SITTIN’ PRETTY

I BRAKE FOR YARD SALES
AIRS @gactv

I Brake For Yard Sales is an amazing premise. It stands for value, saving and preserving what is good and old in american furniture today. Anything can be salvaged. Recycling is one strong way to save the earth. Lara Spencer my dear friend believes that. Samantha Knapp and Tiger Lily’s do too.

“A Society is defined not only by what it creates but by what it refuses to destroy”— John Sawhill,  CEO of The Nature Conservancy and the 12th President of New York University

FAMILY VINTAGE

This is how we found it at Irv & Alexis’ house. It was a classic hand-me-down. I like to think I know every piece of furniture’s story but memory only half the time serves me. I think this belonged to Irv’s aunt. There was a pair of these love seats. It sits two, so people get to be close. That’s where the love comes from. The frame is real wood and the legs are carved. . The cushion Lara is testing out is all down and feather.

UPHOLSTERY CHANGES EVERYTHING
http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com

It really had to be kept. We brought to the Tiger Lily’s workroom. Tiger Lily’s is located at 154 Prospect Street and on line at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. We are the only family run white glove upholstery studio of our kind. We still do it local. We still sit near by. We are not cheap. Everything you do well is an investment. Just think about that. Everything is done on site and under my eye.It was my call to upholster over the frame. The team together chose the gray paint wash. The fabric is by Robert Allen. All the fabrics we used on that episode were as well.

REVEAL GREAT AMERICAN COUNTRY

AFTER:

We can talk cost here. After you take the car off the lot, it depreciates. It dramatically looses value in the next two-to-three operating years. It is why people heavily weigh the decision to buy or lease.  You buy the furniture or someone in your family did. That is where your value starts. If someone had amazing taste or you now do, immediately what you own is better then Restoration Hardware. I am sorry to knock big box brands, but it is true. There are times when you pay more than 30% above commercial retail. There are times you pay less. Custom has its own industry numbers. If you shop there you have to appreciate that.

MORE TO COME
WATCH @gactv

More happens on this episode, including a barely make it moment with the reveal drapes. I fight with Bob. Lara tries to calm the waters. All because the drapes weren’t ready in time. I knew that before I started  my jog that morning. That’s why I am helping in my running shoes. Watch, listen and learn I say. That was the experience I had on I Brake For Yard Sales. I happily share it with you!

YWCA: EMPOWERING WOMEN: CAREER STORIES FROM THE INSIDE, OUT…

YWCA: EMPOWERING WOMEN: CAREER STORIES FROM THE INSIDE, OUT…

I only wish I remembered the names I was tossing out free-style to Danielle LeBrando of the Greenwich Chapter YWCA. That is an organization if there ever was one that nurtures the community. The YWCA feeds, protects and educates. I support that and the idea to Empower Women came about.  Loosely the concept was born. Career Stories from the Inside, Out…

IMG_3100You see it has always been that way for me, the story from the Inside, Out. Readers know this, I share. I share for free with the object of a financial deliverable. This is after-all part of the overall marketing plan and promotion for Tiger Lily’s. I am building a brand so I have to be out there. That’s also where the conversation about promotion at the YWCA started. I shared this instagram. More on that…

WAG MAG
HUGE SUPPORTER

But first, I have to thank WAG MAGAZINE for again recognizing me! Here’s how to promote, believe in the process and share the experience. The market relates to real people. That’s why I blog and share the experience. To have the YWCA recognize and celebrate me was a humbling experience. I am being celebrated for being the Carrie Bradshaw of Interior Design.

CAREER STORIES FROM THE INSIDE, OUT

Fast forward to the moment I showed the audience my morning instagram. Here’s what I wrote: “You’ve got to give them a #show #vintage #christianlacroix #dresslikeyoumeanit #ywca # womenempowermentlecture #inspire #instaday #instamood @tigerlilysgreenwich @lebays.”  Laura as you may recall worked for us. She is on her own wonderful journey now, but forever a part of the growth. A shout-out to her!

MY NOTES ON THAT

I also mention off the cuff to other strong beliefs:

1. To be successful you need to be the model of your own life.

2. To be successful, you need to balance where you think.

I want to thank everyone for listening. I hope I am making a difference. I have to say this because you know I always have a quote hiding behind every corner.  “An affectionate disposition not only makes the mind more peaceful and calm, but it affects our body in a positive way. On the other hand, hatred, jealousy and fear upset our peace of mind, makes us agitated. Our body needs peace of mind and is not suited to agitation. Appreciation for peach of mind is in our blood.” The Dalai Lama

IMG_2832We only need to get there and I thank the YWCA for giving my voice a platform to be heard. Be good person and If you want to be in my life, improve it.

SAM BEHIND THE SCENES: LONNY.COM COTTAGE SHOOT

I want to start with gratitude. I am so thankful for the amazing opportunities that continue to tickle my life and put a smile on my face. It takes support, energy and overall positive well being to create opportunities like the one bestowed on me yesterday when Lonny Magazine, lonny.com came to my house in full celebration of my creativity!

Image

To be recognized for your craft, skill set and definition of living your best life provided for me an inexplicable feeling of achievement that kept me fueled all day.  For the crew, I fueled them with some food. I have to admit living in the suburbs inspires me. I suddenly find inspiration where I never knew it to exist. Tiger Lily’s Tip, plant the seed, it will grow.

Image

The ponies ate dinner at my place too. The last part of the shoot was catching the property in autumn’s best light.

Image

There is so much to share from this experience, but it is not mine alone! For the rest of the story, we all have to excitedly wait for the November issue, lonny.com.

In celebration of new beginnings at any time. In celebration of life and the beauty of every day experiences. I leave you with this quote:

“Aprils have never meant much to me, autumns seem that season of beginning, spring.”
― Truman CapoteBreakfast at Tiffany’s

May your days be forever new. May life keep giving you the sweet stuff that makes it all worth it.

What matters is history, family, legacy, tradition and that’s why Tiger Lily’s.

BEFORE:

I found these tables at an antique center in Connecticut. Aged with a mahogany finish and terribly scratched. I like the size, elegant carved legs, and simply structure that the pair present. I immediately see the potential.

Image

AFTER:

I left part of the finish revealed. With cheese cloth, I layered white and gold hues with the purpose of bring out the existing wood finish. The look is new and fresh. You can go to Restoration Hardware babe, you won’t these there. Individual, expressive, historic, that is how I describe myself and that is how I describe what I make. Come into http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. Support us, give feedback let me know what you think.

I like to leave my blog in quote: “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life,” said Charles Darwin. I value life and lifestyle. This is a great ride friends and I count not be more thankful for the people who appreciate that.

BEFORE & AFTER: DON’T FRET, OLD STOOLS CAN LOOK NEW

COSCO
VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN
MADE IN USA BRAND

BEFORE & AFTER: DON’T FRET, OLD STOOLS CAN LOOK NEW

BEFORE:

In the 1950s, Cosco Metal Furniture,  in Columbus, Indiana lead the industry in manufacturing sensible functional furniture for the home and office. Made in the USA and made well, the furniture turns up in vintage sales and antique stores in almost perfect condition. I found these four bar stools with original COSCO branding and brought them back to our custom workroom, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com.

Image

BEFORE:
COSCO BAR STOOLS
SET OF FOUR

What I like about the stools is the simple lines, mix metals, functional swivel and the scale. The more the merrier when it comes to areas where people congregate.  At a bar or kitchen counter, I prefer four small seats then three over-sized stools. Image

Tiger Lilys Tip #1: When we recreate vintage pieces we always take them down to the bone. In some cases, we can salvage some of the inside materials if it makes sense for the piece. In this case we went with new foam for the back and the seat.

Image

TIGER LILY’S REUPHOLSTERY TIP
BRING PIECE DOWN TO ITS BONES

To transform these stools, I wanted to balance the vintage by introducing an element that was entirely new.  I selected a new 5″ tape by Samuel & Sons. It is from a 2013 collection, called Greek Fret Embroidered Border. I used the camel tone. For this project, I wanted to use the tape in an unconventional way. It is applied as an appliqué.

AFTER:

The final result is a beautiful update on these midcentury modern stools.

Image

AFTER:
A BIT OF OLD MEETS NEW

I try to visualize when creating where I believe a piece of furniture’s next home would be. Finished, I see these stools in a kitchen setting in a contemporary space that plays off neutral tones. They make a great statement in this picture but they can still be yours!

NICK THE INTERN
“ON ASSIGNMENT”

Why? Rhonda Abrams in her book Successful Business Plan: Secrets & Strategies quotes this: “You must have a mission. That is your guiding light, and the filter for every business decision you make.”  Applied to this experience my mission is to raise awareness of the Samantha Knapp for Tiger Lily’s Brand.  I have learned the following. You’ve got to put your brand out there. It starts with the grass roots effort, reconnecting to the community that supports you. #NicktheIntern created that moment today for Tiger Lily’s. He spread the word about the brand.

Thanks buddy, I hope you’re learning well on the job!

BEFORE & AFTER: What’s underneath your clothes?

BEFORE & AFTER: What’s underneath your clothes?

BEFORE: Old Outfit

In honor of Valentine’s Day, today’s before and after is all about your skinnies. If it looks good flaunt it and if it doesn’t look good now, cover it! This works in your love life and your interior design. Above, is a pair of sofas that are in need of a fresh look.

IMG_2918

This is a beach house. The colors need to be more bright. The new colors moving forward became hues of blue popping off crisp white.

The sofas were saved with slip covers in a bright white canvass duck cloth. The ugly body got covered up and the result totally transforms. The space is more casual and certainly enovolved into a great room where the clients spend lots of time.
