AD GERMANY
MARCH, 2014

There is nothing like it. The topic is recognition as it relates to the feeling you get when some one finally notices what you are doing with accolades. You could be defeating all odds and won’t mean a thing unless someone notices. That person has gratitude.

I am frankly humbled with gratitude that Architectural Digest Germany featured my home in its March, 2014 issue.

“the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.“–Gratitude as defined by Webster’s online dictionary.

Of the blessings set before you make your choice, and be content.“-
Samuel Johnson

The cottage was a very deliberate choice when I decided to move out of the city, but at times the experience has inconsistencies. In those moments I have questioned, found peace, patience and gratitude. When I live in that space and time, affirmations from the most unique of places finds me there.

BEFORE & AFTER: GRID IRON GRUB PRESENTS NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER

IMG_9426

NEW ENGLAND CLAIM CHOWER
AS ORIGINAL AS FOOT BALL & FEDERALIST

It was the last time New England and Sunday Football will be paired this season and the first time this year I decided on making this hearty soup.  Yes, the Patriots lost the battle on the gridiron but never was their a more fitting food. Joseph C Lincoln, the American author and poet, said this of chowder:

“A New England clam chowder, made as it should be, is a dish to preach about, to chant praises and sing hymns and burn incense before. To fight for. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought for‚Äďor on‚Äďclam chowder; part of it at least, I am sure it was. It is as American as the Stars and Stripes, as patriotic as the national Anthem. It is ‚ÄėYankee Doodle in a kettle.” ¬†– Joseph C. Lincoln (1870-1944)¬†

IMG_9446

VEGGIES OF THE EARTH
EAT CLEAN

So let’s begin to create history with the battle field in your kitchen. ¬†Here’s what you will need:

BEFORE CLAM CHOWDER

1. Clams 2. Clam Broth 3. Organic Milk 4. Canned Clams (2) 5. 2lbs Little Neck Clams Shelled 6. Potatoes 7. Celery 8. Onions 9. Sherry 10. Bacon 11. Misc. Spices

IMG_9428

BEFORE: CLAM CHOWDER
LAYER FLAVORS IN A POT & COOK

Start with a base flavor profile. In a deep pot I chopped and added onions, celery and bacon with a little bit of olive oil. The bacon arguably has its own fat, but in cooking in a pot rather than a saute pan, it is essential that nothing burns or sticks. This is the base for soup and any char that develops will stick to the bottom of the pot and surface to the top of your palette.

IMG_9434

WASH OFF STARCH
STARCH IS A THICKENING AGENT
IT BINDS

Wash your potatoes. ¬†It does two things. It reduces the starch and frankly the organisms still potentially living on the skin. Potatoes even bought at Whole Foods are rooted in soil. They are dug up from the earth. Mind you, I like a little grit, but that’s only on the foot ball field.

50-YARD LINE:

“This is one of the best individual rivalries in the history of American sports, even if the two guys aren’t banging away at each other in the low blocks the way Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain did; even without the historical significance and glitz of Magic vs. Bird; or the personal histility that Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier brought to their three prizefights.”–New York Daily News, Sunday Jan. 19, 2014

BEFORE CROUTONS

1. Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2. Old Bread 3. Pepper 4. Salt 5. Italian Spices 6. Fontina Cheese

IMG_9441

New England Patriots and the Denver Brancos meet at the center yard line. That’s even playing field. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady were there 14 times before the AFC Championship match-up. It started the last day of September 2001. Tom Brady won the first time. Peyton Manning, the last time. Funny the way it is.

Croutons are a story of old and new. I always use up bread. The same philosophy of reusing, revitalizing and refreshing old furniture in my design life at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com applies to food. I don’t throw food away unless it is rotton. ¬†Eat your leftovers or repurpose them. There are starving people in America who lack access to food.

According to feedarmerica.org,¬†“In 2012, 49.0 million Americans lived in food insecure households, 33.1 million adults and 15.9 million children.”¬†

IMG_9444
CUBE BREAD
MIX OIL, CHEESE, SPICES
COOK @ 350 DEGREES 18-MINUTES

In layman’s terms, that means two-years ago, 49-million American’s didn’t know where their next meal was coming from, the day before. When you are lucky enough to buy food to feed yourself, use it.bOtherwise it is a waste.

Use old bread for croutons cut into chunks. Mix-in olive oil, shredded cheese and spices until moist. Spread on cookie sheet and bake 350 degrees.

AFTER: CROUTONS

AFTER:
CLASSIC CROUTONS
REUSEABLE TEXTURE

The croutons should crumble and break into different size pieces as you touch. They can last for up to three-weeks in an air-tight seal and perfect added texture to salads. I used it here, unexpectedly, in place of traditional oyster crackers. I stronly believe in presentation and completing a thought in any field. Similiar to design, the thought process in food has no exceptions in balance, texture, color and presentation.

“Think in layers and always ask, what elements do I need to make the circle come full round?”—Samantha Knapp

IMG_9445
LAYER STOCK
FINISH WITH MILK & SHERRY
COOK COMPLETE

On the subject of full circle comes the completion of the soup. From the initial base, I layered in bay leaves, the potatoes, salt, pepper, the canned little neck clams while slowly adding the liquid components, clam juice, milk and sherry. Let that all cook for at least ten minutes at a boil, then simmer for twenty more.

WINNING COMBINATION

AFTER: CLAM CHOWDER

Serve in a deep bowl with a soup spoon. Garnish with bacon bits and the croutons.

Tom Brady  at 36-years-old  won 10 of 14 games before this Sunday. With the Super Bowl on the line in a returning match-ups, each team has come out with a win. Peyton Manning 37-years-old  now tipping that scale. On route to his third Super Bowl, a feet seen only by his rival Tom Brady, Troy Aikmen, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana, Manning had this to say:

¬†“You certainly want to win one more”–Peyton Manning

I say try the soup.

SAMANTHA KNAPP
INTERIOR DECORATOR, FILM CRITIC, DOG HOLDER
LONNY.COM NOV. 2013

BEFORE & AFTER: SAMANTHA KNAPP, FILM CRITIC “DON JON”

Introducing Samantha Knapp, film critic.  I share so much of my life, including in this blog new pictures from Lonny.com that pop up now when you #googlesearchme.  To stay creative in my business, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, I am all about broading my stroke. I am always selling the business, just so you know.  Good business is  pushing the boundaries. It is in that vein that I offer my movie critique of Don Jon, it debuted at a film festival in 2013, and just came to appletv.

Image

DON JON
JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT
ACTOR, AUTHOR, DIRECTOR

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, stars, wrote and produced this screen play. That is no small feat. The last impressive story line to start and finish from one source is Goodwill Hunting.  Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are good company and set the bar high. Gordon-Levitt delivers in a way that makes you doubt he grew up on the television set of Third Rock From The Sun in exchange for the version where he spent his most formative  years in coffee shops brushing elbows with struggling writers day dreaming on their craft.  You want to touch muscles like that and never mind he writes. The prose reads like a novel pennedof an established writer like JD Salinger, riffing on contemporary love.

HAND FOR WRITING
STRONG ARMS FOR LIFTING

There’s only a few things I really care about in life. My body. My pad. My ride. My family. My church. My boys. My girls. My porn.“–Don Jon

We see a character transform in Gordon-Levitt who at open protrays the a sterotypical Jersey guy. Jon is an italian junior to his father played Tony Danza. Football watching, wife-beater wearing Danza is much harder then the soft spoken poor man-nanny in the 1980s sitcom favorite¬†Who’s the Boss. Acting as the senior, Jon, he has a sharp temper and narrow vision of family life.

Danza arguably is not the only character stuck in define roles and realms of how relationships are set to work. Enter Scarlett Johansson as Barbara. ¬†A relationship for Barbara boils down to the money you have on the table and the potential in the cards you are handed to make more. ¬†You play the hand that’s dealt and you climb. You sure as hell don’t do your own house-cleaning. ¬†That’s the base of the relationship. The foundation above this is constantly tested on a scale of what have you done? Among her many demands are strict guidelines on school, friends, family time and it turns out, porn. She wants none of it.

Gordon Levitt is never able to comply on the porn. He is caught twice and the relationship ends.

RELATIONSHIP REALITY IN A DIGITAL AGE
IS IT BETTER IN REAL LIFE?

“Achievement is real life. You achieve for yourself. That’s human nature. No one teaches us to breathe. We just do it”¬†— Samantha Knapp
For what it is worth, I don’t think the character was less of a person for not being able to comply to every demand. Arguably I would prefer he default on the church thing, but the point remains that we can’t control other people and there is always a reason behind an unkindly act.
You have to want to do it for yourself. That’s achievement.¬†Achievement is hard work and a personal experience. That’s the broad stroke, underneather which you create sub catagories of where you want that achievement to apply. 9 out of 10 people want ¬†love, the other 10% I think want money. There’s a perfect world that I am trying to create where both exist ūüôā ¬†According to the Huffington Post there are things success people do differently.
TRAITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE:
1. Express Gratitude
2. Cultivate Optimism
3. Avoid Social Comparisons
4. Avoid Over Thinking
5. Practice Acts of Kindness

LOVE YOURSELF
BE ALL YOU CAN BE
LONNY.COM Nov. 2013

Become your own person. Gordon-Levitt teaches us that when he seeks out pure happiness after his failed Barbara relationship.  If you are authentic in youself and open your mind, you will arrive at a place where love, achievement, success all coexist.

AFTER:

don jon2
In the end Jon finds love and kicks the porn habit.¬†Gordon Levitt opens the movie with what he got out of porn that he couldn’t experience from his relationship.

“I don’t gotta say anything, I don’t gotta do anything. I just fucking lose myself” –Don Jon

He closes with what he gets out a relationship of love.  Julianne Moore plays the recently widowed and open hearted Esther who teaches Jon how being current in love is a good reality to lose yourself.

“This fuckin’ lady! Now I don’t usually like it when a girl looks me right in the eye, and this girl does that a lot. But I don’t know what it is about her, when she does it, I don’t mind. I just look right back at her, and pretty soon, I’m hard as a fuckin’ rock. It’s like she knows what I’m thinkin’, or I know what she’s thinkin’. I don’t know, it’s a two-way thing. Fuckin’ love it! And I don’t mean love like, oh I love her or wanna marry her, definitely not thinkin’ about all that shit. And she’s not either… she can’t. I guess I just mean love like, you know like… we’re making love. And while we’re doing it, all the bullshit does fade away, and it’s just me and her right there, and yeah I do lose myself in her. And I can tell she’s losing herself in me. And we’re just fuckin’… lost together.”--Don Jon

ABOUT SAMANTHA KNAPP

I liked this movie. Gordon-Levitt gives us a true American love story. It is two-thumbs up! ¬†How about me, you ask? I could say a lot, pictures sure do… I will wait for the movie ūüôā

I read Forbes. I look for ideas, leadership and answers daily. This blog has always been a business experience on a personal level. Ground Zero if you will, the most balanced and strongest point. At zero there is no money include. The samanthaknapp.wordpress blog for me is that platform. On many levels, it is a free shared experience. Executed effectively, this business model is the most effective of its kind.

I went to small business school, albeit Goldman Sachs.  CNNMoney.com suggests Lloyd Blankfein got a 75% raise in 2012 culminating in an earning package of $21 million for the fiscal year. I would like to think a brand like that can give me tools to grow. Beer can feed your growth.

As a woman business owner,¬†I constantly have to evaluate what trend my client is responding to. It is always one client, seen as the whole. More specifically, where & how is she spending on the image of her family’s life? How much does she spend on her home? The question applies whether she works or not by-the-way. I am a liberal working woman. I support feminists. ¬†I have every intention of being a working wife.

BUSINESS & BLOG GROWTH SPURT

I applied this awareness to my blog, with surprising results. I blog about interior design. On the 28th, I shared from my personal recipe archive. I unknowingly ¬†expanded the lifestyle brand. I captured an audience three-times my normal reach. That’s a 66% new audience share. “Creativity is just connecting things.” that’s from critical thinker Steve Jobs. A strict vegetarian influenced by¬†Arnold Ehret book¬†The Mucusless Diet Healing System,¬†I am fully aware this recipe would not be his thing ūüôā

MY RECIPE FISH & CHIPS

1. ONE BOTTLE BEER.

Chose your preferred beer. I selected Sierra Nevada. Though the acutal mountain range itself is quite dense, the Pale Ale has a logger influence in a light taste.

#3 MIX

I am a self taught cook, so the recipe is as much about my natural flavor profiles as it can be yours. Combine two-cups of flour and a pinch of baking soda to the beer then mix. ¬†The yeast gives the fluffy rise. The flour is the perfect neutral backdrop for layers of spice. It has potential. ¬†There is an organic opportunity to add another layer of taste. ¬†It is important to try here. It is a business attitude applied to life. Don’t ever think you can’t.

#5 CREATE A SAUCE

The story behind fish and chips is an English one. A stock & hearty meal for the working class, it was also one of the few foods not rationed during World War II. Served in disposal-recycled newspapers reinforced the fruagality of it all. That’s the bittersweet history, now you have to use that taste and make it new.

The creative sauce gives you ownership of your product. The product we are serving is Pepper Infused Beer Battered Cod Fish with a basil & beef reduction sauce served alongside parmesan dusted yucca fries.  The sauce is a bit of grees, spices, garlic clove, onion, beef brooth and orange juice. Blend then heat. Try a few combinations before you are absolutely satisfied.

Jobs said, “Details matter, it‚Äôs worth waiting to get it right.”

#6 THE MIX

“If you keep your eye on the profit, you‚Äôre going to skimp on the product. But if you focus on making really great products, then the profits will follow.“–Steve Jobs

Life is the perfect mix. It is the balance. It is knowing that one foot supports the other. Loose a load-bearing wall and the building falls down. I am learning that on the job at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. I make money as a business owner and self-proclaimed expert interior designer, furniture & pillow designer. ¬†I am now sharing my widespread passion for life style just for the thrill. ¬†I don’t get paid for blogging and yet most days it feels like the most important daily statement I will make.

At Tiger Lily’s the image of lifestyle is the product. It is not my own. The brand stands alone, ¬†built by a dynamic husband and wife who are my parents. We sell customized. A select consumer buys. The buyer has to have loved the classic chose your own adventure books, for starters. Only serious inquiries should apply. It is the beat to the different drummer person. It is the celebration of hand-made artisans producing daily, one-of-a-kind.

COOK UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN

#7 COOK UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN

If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time. Once you have identified what you want to do in business, life, cooking…find your inner patience and dedicated strength. Only the strong survive. It takes time to gather and mix the ingredients. It steals moments and it makes you chose. It takes time to marinate and develop a flavor profile. You won’t know what it tastes like until it arrives. That again is where patience comes in. Then, only then do you cook.

Entrepreneurs who don’t make it lack a steadfast dedication and appreciation for leting the ingredients cook.

‚Äú‚ÄôI‚Äôm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.‚Äô‚ÄĚ–Steve Jobs¬†

TIP-AFTER
ALWAYS ICE THE CAKE
DESIGN MATTERS

#7 SERVE WITH STYLE

I want to always give the impression that what I touch and put my time, energy and love into matters. At http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, I package and deliver that. In my own home I do the same. It is just as important that who you are in your business world is who you are at home. Consistency and reliability are grounds for creative growth. I stacked the fried cod around a decorative fish bursting with yucca fries. Everything is topped off by the sauce. Always ice the cake.

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”–Steve Jobs.

I quoted a lot things Steve Jobs said a little past a year since his death. ¬†I hope I quoted as much of my own. Original thinking is the constant here. It is my ¬†recipe take away. Jobs pursued a passion to open people’s mind to more effectively share and communicate. The scale being sky-scraping or solid ground.

He left us a lot to consider and a lot to work with from his ground breaking products or carefully considered authorized biography by Walter Isaacson. Isaacson, it goes without saying evaluated for our consideration,  Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein and Henry Kissinger.  Read it. I did.

BEFORE & AFTER: BEHIND THE SCENES FRENCH STYLE CHAIRS

BEFORE &  AFTER: BEHIND THE SCENES  FRENCH CHAIRS

IMG_6422

HGTV aired, Tiger Lily’s approved! We love being part of Lara Spencer’s ” I Brake For Yard Sales,” team and watched like all the other viewers as the pieces we helped put together came to life in the homes of two deserving families on the debut episode friday Oct. 4th. If you didn’t see it, watch for repeats! ¬†Lara coined me the “fabric guru” which actually made me laugh because I can recall pouring over prints and colors in a bid to bring what’s old back to new again. So here it goes:

BEFORE:

We started with the family’s wood framed, french styled bergere chair. They were well-worn and featured the original and at one time popular silk check with a goldish faux wood finish. The pair had a loose cushion and loose back.

IMG_6462

BEFORE:
TRADITIONAL CHAIRS IN ORIGINAL FABRIC

We decided on a neutral print for new upholstery. I especially liked the concept of bringing a print into a room for this family.  Husband and wife were looking for a neutral palette to  create a new classic look that could go the distance as styles and trends change. The ferns were a perfect pick to satisfy all the points on our check list.

Image

NEW FABRIC
NEW LOOK

To save on the expense of the fabric, we changed the back of the chair to be a tight back. This new look came out of the consideration to save some cost on the price of fabric but also added decorative value.  The beauty of bringing a older piece to our workroom, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, is that we can make small changes to existing pieces that are not only decorative but cost effective.

Image

CHANGED TIGHT BACK
FRAME WHITE WASHED

We left the seat cushion alone and worked with the existing fabric to make a matching border on the seat. The entire frame is finished with a fresh white wash to remove all the dated golden hues that were once a focal point of the chair.

LOOSE SEAT CUSHION

AFTER:

The outcome is remarkable. We were able to transform what looked like a tired and dated living room chair to one that was inviting and fresh both in color and print. The reveal on this one is ten times more exciting on the show “I Brake For Yard Sales.”

BEFORE & AFTER: WHEN SEATING IS ON THE MENU

9NHNe20GgI4UK1FvhygZabppU0UAPZrEc4eCIw9ofBMBEFORE & AFTER: BANQUET

Tiger Lily’s is custom. That is our identity. We build ground up, all wood. There are short cuts to getting what you want in life and they start with big box retailers. Big Box we are not. Big Box uses pressed cardboard, filament. Tiger Lily’s uses wood. I know I know, it sounds repetitive but it goes back to what we believe in and what we stand for.

ua_NVpxCAZNX42VKwDisY28u1kVEMz2J1O4xFfbtjPs

Tiger Lily’s is quality. We know the name of everyone who works in our workroom, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. We know their family. We know their life story, where they came from and what they dream for their children. That is a wonderful thing.

The frame of this settee was built for a friend of mine. Lindsey Boyd Weiber of the Laundress. http://www.thelaundress.com. Lindsey is incredible talented and creative person. She is the mother of one and soon to be two. This banquet is for her dining table.

kaY0uZV-ds-KSn5M-QzSe4xvwRBWmB8D_cq-hVoJTSg

The banquet is going to accompany a Saarinen dining table.  Which has the same round edges.  The banquet seat follows the lines and contour of the oval table.Unknown-1

The first step in taking frame to finish is adding platforms and webbing. The frame is secured with alternate webbing then covered in medium foam.
IMG_6374 copy
We exaggerated the  back height of the frame to give it weight against the table. It has a tight seat and tight back.

jpi5j26b_1gYEAE6XxlUOMEy3Y7f4trRw8UZybSpPX8

To get a tight clean finish, the seat is upholstered first in muslin and pulled and tightened through the frame.

_wY-JnT1xUP3r8D-BgN2CScdJ8ubU9vABanBmbz2d8w To achieve a square stitch effect on the seat, we have to first sketch out the pattern on the foam. Each square has been perfectly measured to be consistent across the span on the back.
x6hvX-l7saCwZhvZl5rgm_RgDRIigF13_b4Ef9MRe1k

The vinyl is stitched to create a square shape, before it is upholstered. When it is done right the lines should exactly match what we sketched on the platform.

AFTER:
Fully upholstered the finished piece is a great and durable seating arrangement for a oval shaped table. The patten leather is easy to clean and the decorative stitch adds a small element of surprise and detail that takes this piece from catalog to custom.A8eL6qMCTpyFwr8XH2N_PuzmF3ZGmLHLLgTubYqXq6QI like to end blogs in a quote.
