I Brake For Yard Sales is an amazing premise. It stands for value, saving and preserving what is good and old in american furniture today. Anything can be salvaged. Recycling is one strong way to save the earth. Lara Spencer my dear friend believes that. Samantha Knapp and Tiger Lily’s do too.
This is how we found it at Irv & Alexis’ house. It was a classic hand-me-down. I like to think I know every piece of furniture’s story but memory only half the time serves me. I think this belonged to Irv’s aunt. There was a pair of these love seats. It sits two, so people get to be close. That’s where the love comes from. The frame is real wood and the legs are carved. . The cushion Lara is testing out is all down and feather.
It really had to be kept. We brought to the Tiger Lily’s workroom. Tiger Lily’s is located at 154 Prospect Street and on line at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. We are the only family run white glove upholstery studio of our kind. We still do it local. We still sit near by. We are not cheap. Everything you do well is an investment. Just think about that. Everything is done on site and under my eye.It was my call to upholster over the frame. The team together chose the gray paint wash. The fabric is by Robert Allen. All the fabrics we used on that episode were as well.
We can talk cost here. After you take the car off the lot, it depreciates. It dramatically looses value in the next two-to-three operating years. It is why people heavily weigh the decision to buy or lease. You buy the furniture or someone in your family did. That is where your value starts. If someone had amazing taste or you now do, immediately what you own is better then Restoration Hardware. I am sorry to knock big box brands, but it is true. There are times when you pay more than 30% above commercial retail. There are times you pay less. Custom has its own industry numbers. If you shop there you have to appreciate that.
More happens on this episode, including a barely make it moment with the reveal drapes. I fight with Bob. Lara tries to calm the waters. All because the drapes weren’t ready in time. I knew that before I started my jog that morning. That’s why I am helping in my running shoes. Watch, listen and learn I say. That was the experience I had on I Brake For Yard Sales. I happily share it with you!

A WEEK IN INSTAGRAM: ONE IN 75-MILLION DAILY
I got board on call waiting and rechecked my instagram. Of the 75-million users daily, I am one. 35% of the users check instagram more then once a day. The term selfie first appeared in the internet urban dictionary June 29, 2009. To paraphrase and update the defined entry, a selfie is a picture taken by yourself that is planned to be uploaded to Facebook,...the obsolete Myspace and now instagram, snapchat, twitter...or any other sort of social networking website.
“A selfie is usually accompanied by a kissy face or the individual looking in a direction that is not towards the camera.”–SaRAWRR, July 29,2009 (urbandictionary.com)
“A selfie is a free opportunity of self expression that done right can act as an advertisement of your state of mind, your mood, your essence.”–Samantha Knapp 01,18,2014 (samanthaknapp.wordpress.com)
If it is done in the business of selling your own brand, it leads to sale. I sell my brand almost every day. That’s where instagram and all these avenues of social media come in. I feel blessed that my self expression is appreciated and celebrated. The celebrity with the most selfies on instagram is Kylie Jenner with 451+. She sells the Karadashian brand. I am selling Samantha Knapp for Tiger Lily’s.
If you want people to believe in your lifestyle brand, you have to invite them inside your home. Feed them with nuggets of information about you style. I define culture to be what you do and don’t like. That’s the sticking point. I shared my culture with Lonny.com (http://www.lonny.com/magazine/November+2013/PKNA7_-nAsm/1#59). The article detailed my lifestyle, philosophy on love, business and nature. It was called Rural Remix.
Gilt.com celebrated my Rural Remix in a sale of its own this week. Check it out (http://www.gilt.com/home/sale/rural-remix). I sold the teal dresser that was a buyer’s pick. I also hand painted it.
Onto selling www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com.I am proud our brand stands for revitalization of vintage pieces and the celebration luxury buyer access. At our store you can buy my designs or create your own. Duralee fabrics are just one of the three-dozen brands of specialized upholstery textiles that we offer for retail sale. See it to believe it and do something different for yourself and your home.
Duralee is just one product I endorse. Marketingtechblog.com posted a November 2011 article by Douglas Karr on “Infographic: The Growning Product Placement Industry.” He concluded that product placement is a 25-billion dollar industry that is potentially influencing story-lines in movies and seriously influencing our buying behaviors. According to Karr, Daniel Craig’s return to James Bond in Skyfall was financed in part by product placement revenue.
“Apple products appeared in 30% of the 33 top films in 2010. Nike, Chevy and Ford in 24%. Sony, Dell, Land Rover and Glock in 15%.” – Inforgraphic: The Growing Product Placement Industry.
I also like my Huntress Boots. I got them in my television news days at WKMG. Central Florida that season had its share of severe weather and hurricanes. I wore these once reporting on the cresting tide of an flooded lake. Alligators, I later learned the morning were dangerously close. I wear them now when I take my dogs and walk on Babcock Trail. I like to test the products I buy. These boots are still holding up. I am standing in a creek working on a picture of a walking bridge. My feet stayed dry.
“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.”–Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Monk & Princeton Graduate
The earth is the foundation of which we experience everything that life has to offer in love, music, taste, color, food, design and so much more. Nature heals. I am a believer and a user of its positive impact. I walk outside a few times a week. The key to a positive vibration is the understanding that no matter what happens, the sun’s gonna rise again.
“Well a son’s gonna rise in a mile. In a mile You’ll be feeling fine”–Clarence Greenwood, Son’s Gonna Rise
Hemingway believes the Sun Also Rises. That said, I am on the move. In part to Fairfield tonight to see the Citizen Cope Concert and in part to go live more of my life so I can hopefully inspire and create.
BEFORE & AFTER: SAMANTHA KNAPP, FILM CRITIC “DON JON”
Introducing Samantha Knapp, film critic. I share so much of my life, including in this blog new pictures from Lonny.com that pop up now when you #googlesearchme. To stay creative in my business, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, I am all about broading my stroke. I am always selling the business, just so you know. Good business is pushing the boundaries. It is in that vein that I offer my movie critique of Don Jon, it debuted at a film festival in 2013, and just came to appletv.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, stars, wrote and produced this screen play. That is no small feat. The last impressive story line to start and finish from one source is Goodwill Hunting. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are good company and set the bar high. Gordon-Levitt delivers in a way that makes you doubt he grew up on the television set of Third Rock From The Sun in exchange for the version where he spent his most formative years in coffee shops brushing elbows with struggling writers day dreaming on their craft. You want to touch muscles like that and never mind he writes. The prose reads like a novel pennedof an established writer like JD Salinger, riffing on contemporary love.
“There’s only a few things I really care about in life. My body. My pad. My ride. My family. My church. My boys. My girls. My porn.“–Don Jon
We see a character transform in Gordon-Levitt who at open protrays the a sterotypical Jersey guy. Jon is an italian junior to his father played Tony Danza. Football watching, wife-beater wearing Danza is much harder then the soft spoken poor man-nanny in the 1980s sitcom favorite Who’s the Boss. Acting as the senior, Jon, he has a sharp temper and narrow vision of family life.
Danza arguably is not the only character stuck in define roles and realms of how relationships are set to work. Enter Scarlett Johansson as Barbara. A relationship for Barbara boils down to the money you have on the table and the potential in the cards you are handed to make more. You play the hand that’s dealt and you climb. You sure as hell don’t do your own house-cleaning. That’s the base of the relationship. The foundation above this is constantly tested on a scale of what have you done? Among her many demands are strict guidelines on school, friends, family time and it turns out, porn. She wants none of it.
Gordon Levitt is never able to comply on the porn. He is caught twice and the relationship ends.
1. Express Gratitude
Become your own person. Gordon-Levitt teaches us that when he seeks out pure happiness after his failed Barbara relationship. If you are authentic in youself and open your mind, you will arrive at a place where love, achievement, success all coexist.
“I don’t gotta say anything, I don’t gotta do anything. I just fucking lose myself” –Don Jon
He closes with what he gets out a relationship of love. Julianne Moore plays the recently widowed and open hearted Esther who teaches Jon how being current in love is a good reality to lose yourself.
“This fuckin’ lady! Now I don’t usually like it when a girl looks me right in the eye, and this girl does that a lot. But I don’t know what it is about her, when she does it, I don’t mind. I just look right back at her, and pretty soon, I’m hard as a fuckin’ rock. It’s like she knows what I’m thinkin’, or I know what she’s thinkin’. I don’t know, it’s a two-way thing. Fuckin’ love it! And I don’t mean love like, oh I love her or wanna marry her, definitely not thinkin’ about all that shit. And she’s not either… she can’t. I guess I just mean love like, you know like… we’re making love. And while we’re doing it, all the bullshit does fade away, and it’s just me and her right there, and yeah I do lose myself in her. And I can tell she’s losing herself in me. And we’re just fuckin’… lost together.”--Don Jon
ABOUT SAMANTHA KNAPP
I liked this movie. Gordon-Levitt gives us a true American love story. It is two-thumbs up! How about me, you ask? I could say a lot, pictures sure do… I will wait for the movie 🙂
Life happens and before you know it, the things you meant to get yesterday are a week’s time into the future. I had planned to write this blog on Monday, before that right after this tree delivered to Enchanted Forest in late November. The holidays come hard and fast. So move quickly and enjoy every moment. The opportunity to show people you love them exists everywhere.
This is the giving tree. It is one of dozens that decked-the-hall of the Hyatt for the Greenwich Junior League’s “Enchanted Forest.” Money raised goes to the charities the Junior League cares about. I care about that. Giving is the first part of the lesson. You give, you receive. It is that simple.
The tree comes in a box and with it an opportunity for the ultimate use of your imagination. It begs the question what does the holiday mean to you? How can you express that in the decoration of a tree.
Tradition says Romans, Egyptians and even Babylonians brought in their various species of evergreen trees to signify that come springtime, life would return to the winterized lands. Germans are credited with popularizing the modern day version of the tree in the 16th century. Christians would bring trees into their homes and light them with candles.
The most popular trees are: Scots Pine, Easter White Pine, White Spruce and Colorado which have the longest needles. Ours was plastic. I used that to my advantage and added more plastic to it! The peace symbols came from #Party City in Port Chester.
This holiday, give peace a chance. That’s all I am sayin’ 🙂 It is the overall theme of the tree. “A Very Grateful Christmas,” by Tigerlilysgreenwich.com. The 2013 tree dates back to the 1960s peace movement. The backdrop was music. One of which the Grateful Dead. One tour they played drums over 1,400 times (http://www.setlist.fm/stats/grateful-dead-bd6ad4a.html) , covered their lead two songs Playing in the Band & Not Fade Away over 600 times. The first time they played my favorite song, Box of Rain, was at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco on October 9th 1972.
“It’s just a box of rain. I don’t know who put it there. Believe it if you need it or leave it if you dare. And it’s just a box of rain or a riboon for your hair. Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there”
I put everything I could think of on the tree to give it an authentic feel. Flowers and granola bars were a natural touch. The rest is a combination of store bought items and a few we hand made. When you are looking to do something different, artistic and authentic use my favorite rule:
To sides balance the scale. Always look to balance the yin to the yang. In this case it’s fake tree with the real elements. Jerry Garcia himself is quoted as saying, ” I mean, just because you’re a musician doesn’t mean all your ideas are about music.” Look for more then what you think is destiny for yourself. See beyond clouds. There is always sun.
On the subject of the sun or gold anyway, here come my sell. Tigerlilysgreenwich.com is all custom. It is one-of-a-kind. It is hand-crafted in an era of mass production. Spend with us and I stay in business.
Our artisans hand-sewed the Christmas tree skirt. Tiger Lily’s can do anything you can ask for. It is all produced by one-family. The Knapps. If you go to the store 154 Prospect Street, you can ask for anyone of us by name. We are proud of that.
“And the tree was happy” That’s Shel Silverstein. If you know the book, you know that tree loved a boy very very much-even more then she loved herself. That is the thing about love. You have to do it like you mean and like it means the world to you.
This Christmas, beyond religion see the trees, the lights, the presents as symbols of love, peace, graditude and possibility. The truth is you can do that at any time and any where. Still, it is never a better time to believe in the magic and spirit of christmas.
I end every blog on a quote and today is no different for this Jewish girl who believes in Christmas.
“And it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!”
― Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

I can’t share the details. In television they call that cheating. All I have is the picture of me. I decided to rock out my outfit. It is a celebration afterall of home and family. A mix of Rebecca Taylor & Tory Burch.
MY OBSERVATION: NEW YORK OBSERVER
Here’s what I know about the New York Observer, “chronicling the latest developments in finance, media, real estate, politics, society, tech and culture with an insider’s perspective, a keen sense of curiosity and a sharp wit. Aimed at a sophisticated readership of influential young urban professionals, it illuminates the characters behind the scenes of the nation’s economic and cultural industries, offering a real-time narrative of power, ambition and creativity.”
Here’s what they know about me:
I was quoted September 30th, thank you 🙂 “What sets a square room apart from a box with four walls,” says Samantha Knapp. “it the details, be it molding, chair rails or beadboard. The outcome is a softer and warmer personalized space.
I said this to the author, Rebecca Morse, who’s assigment it was to capture the value pre-war architectural detail has in New York apartment buildings. We connected through Wellbuilt’s Mitch Kidd (www.wellbuiltco.com). The molding in the hallway a Wellbuilt add-on paired with traditional styled David Hicks runner, I selected make this space.
I also like the projector, the reference to time and space. Old tradition stops at a point and New tradition takes place. It is how history repeats itself. In the words of Ken Kesey; “It’s time to move on to the next step in the psychedelic revolution. We’ve reached a certain point, but we’re not moving any more.”
Good design affords me that opportunity. It can be said as much about a old piece of furniture becoming new, then it can about love. It thrills me everyday that http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com stands for that.
Thank you New York Observer for recognizing my expertise. Thank you New York Obsever that you recognizing me as a loyal, preservationist. Everything about http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, is about protecting and cherishing what we’ve got.
I pass on this lesson that hasn’t been published by me yet, Work with you have in life and go forward. That is the best you do.
