Sum up your aesthetic in 3 words.
balanced, unconventional, interpretive
What is your design philosophy?
It is all about balance in an unexpected way. I want to trick the eye into thinking that everything goes together as if it evolved over time. Rooms should have a sense of legacy, we should all value where we are from and respect heritage by proudly displaying it in a current setting.

“I am a creative thinker. To me mixture creates balance and that is my philosophy.”
What new color palate are you using now?

The truth is every color palette has existed and remained over time. There is a level of comfort in that everything can and will come back to life. In my own home I played off the traditional pairing of Red, White & Blue. It sounds Confederate but changed in tone, it becomes extremely contemporary. My advice is to choice a palette that you are comfortable with and expand on its limits. It is also important to note that the color wheel is a circle, there is no start and no ending so it makes sense that every color can match each other. It all depends on how you use it.

What are some of your favorite materials?
I love natural wood. There are so many levels of grading which produces great texture. Natural products also have a distinctive level of absorption. That texture and bouyancy also manipulates colors, wood stains and light reflection. You can get that from laminate or pressed board. Neither the former materials can absorb an imperfection.

MADE FROM THE BEST STUFF ON EARTH WOOD ON SALE WWW.CHAIRISTA.COM

Wood is the oldest materials to work and if we don’t protect our environment we are going to loose it as a commodity. It is a higher priced value so it makes sense to re-invest in old wood furnishings. You can expect a reinvestment in a piece of furniture to be more expensive then buying big box new. You should also be able to appreciate that.
The question…preserving antiques or buying something new? Open up a chair you buy from Crate & Barrel or Ikea and you will know my answer to that.
I like organic, hides, metal, stone, feathers, silk, beads, bolts, textiles

Who is your favorite design icon of the past?
Sister Parish. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet her grand-daughter who actively keeps the textile brand alive. Sister, as she was called,  decorated Jacki-O’s White House. That’s enough reason for me.

What item of furniture should every home have?

Something with a story. Every home needs to have a piece of furniture that reminds them of where they are from. Our culture is built on rich history and legacy. I walk around my house and smile. I know what I have from my mom and what pieces I will give to my children.

ALL IN THE FAMILY DESIGN FOR THE GENERATIONS

What destination has inspired you the most creatively?
Life’s journey is my inspiration. It is never one thing and I take comfort in knowing that. It allows me to always be open for the next best thing. Creativity is created by good energy flow.
What is your design motto?
Design with a purpose in mind, it gives you the flexibility to arrive at the destination from multiple pathways. Be true to yourself. Use color, it makes you smile and makes you look warm. When you look warm your body is radiating good energy. You want your kids to grow up surrounded with positive energy so add a little color. Show your kids that your never too old to enjoy bright colors.

BEFORE & AFTER: DEER ME: THERE’S A STORY BEHIND EVERY PICTURE

BEFORE & AFTER: DEER ME: THERE’S A STORY BEHIND EVERY PICTURE

Image

There is a story behind every picture. There is a moment behind every moment in life. This is why history, preservation, tradition and values are so important. It should be that every moment is a celebration of one past.

INSPIRED BY TALENTED DESIGN
Jeffrey Bilhuber

The before is an inspiration picture. You never know what you are capable of until you are inspired. Inspiration is design, love and foundation. I happen to love Jeffrey Bilhuber’s eclectic  design. He has so much grace, lifestyle and elegance.

“Someone with a point of view is rather chic. Someone focused, articulate, with personality, integrity, and honesty is enormously stylish. Oh, and glamor? To be true to oneself is powerfully glamorous. ”

BARGAIN BOX

I got this box of antlers for bargain. They were literally picked straight off the vine or in deer terms, skinned straight off the buck. I bargained for more then ten-full sets and a few extra pieces. I singlehandedly cleaned the antlers to create the design.

NEXT STEP
SAND & PAINT

The goal is to make things look as if they appeared. In all good design and in all good life moments there has to be a sense of magic. It is as if you don’t know where something came from but it has been there all along. That is the trick to creativity, seeing the future differently and seeing the outcome differently then how it currently exists. I think that is also the lesson of positive thinking. To create age and style, I then sanded the antlers and washed them with white paint.

MOUNTED ON WALL

There are few more pictures before this wonderful reveal after captured by photographer Melanie  Acevedo on behalf of the Lonny Magazine team. There is a few of the house when I got there, the long and inspiring nights of trying to see the space differently. There are the pictures of when I held the leather to the wall and thought it could hang there. There are the pictures of the installation where my Dad came over late at night to hang the installation. There is still mystery and good to life. That’s why it is not included. You can know the outcome and revel. You can’t know the whole story. Appreciate what you have and what has been given to you. Look to love yourself, others and the wonderful opportunities along the way.

Thank you Lonny Magazine, My Family, My friends and supporters that I never knew existed.  May the universe keep surprising me in all the best ways 🙂

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL: BEFORE & AFTER

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, how do I make my walls look tall? Mirrors are an important element in decorating. They function to reflect light, opening spaces and creating new balance to any room. When I shop for a mirrors, I look for textured framing, unusual shapes, a mixture of contemporay and traditional frames, and unusual combinations. Sometimes a collection of small mirrors can take the place of one statement mirror, while other times there’s only one.

Image

I found this mirror at an antique center in Stamford, CT. I loved the size and the metal framing. Inside the workroom at Tiger Lily’s Greenwich, I peeled back some of the heavy paint with an electric sander. It gave me new color tones and allowed for different shading to peek through. I finished the frame with a clear varnish. It now hangs in a client’s front foyer creating an amazing openess to the space while giving everyone one last chance to look in the mirror before heading out the door!Image
