I BRAKE FOR YARD SALES
AIRS @gactv

I Brake For Yard Sales is an amazing premise. It stands for value, saving and preserving what is good and old in american furniture today. Anything can be salvaged. Recycling is one strong way to save the earth. Lara Spencer my dear friend believes that. Samantha Knapp and Tiger Lily’s do too.

FAMILY VINTAGE

This is how we found it at Irv & Alexis’ house. It was a classic hand-me-down. I like to think I know every piece of furniture’s story but memory only half the time serves me. I think this belonged to Irv’s aunt. There was a pair of these love seats. It sits two, so people get to be close. That’s where the love comes from. The frame is real wood and the legs are carved. . The cushion Lara is testing out is all down and feather.

UPHOLSTERY CHANGES EVERYTHING
http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com

It really had to be kept. We brought to the Tiger Lily’s workroom. Tiger Lily’s is located at 154 Prospect Street and on line at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com. We are the only family run white glove upholstery studio of our kind. We still do it local. We still sit near by. We are not cheap. Everything you do well is an investment. Just think about that. Everything is done on site and under my eye.It was my call to upholster over the frame. The team together chose the gray paint wash. The fabric is by Robert Allen. All the fabrics we used on that episode were as well.

REVEAL GREAT AMERICAN COUNTRY

AFTER:

We can talk cost here. After you take the car off the lot, it depreciates. It dramatically looses value in the next two-to-three operating years. It is why people heavily weigh the decision to buy or lease.  You buy the furniture or someone in your family did. That is where your value starts. If someone had amazing taste or you now do, immediately what you own is better then Restoration Hardware. I am sorry to knock big box brands, but it is true. There are times when you pay more than 30% above commercial retail. There are times you pay less. Custom has its own industry numbers. If you shop there you have to appreciate that.

MORE TO COME
WATCH @gactv

More happens on this episode, including a barely make it moment with the reveal drapes. I fight with Bob. Lara tries to calm the waters. All because the drapes weren’t ready in time. I knew that before I started  my jog that morning. That’s why I am helping in my running shoes. Watch, listen and learn I say. That was the experience I had on I Brake For Yard Sales. I happily share it with you!

BRIMFIELD ANTIQUE SHOW
I BRAKE FOR YARD SALES
@laraspencer

A few times a year, (May, June and September) the opportunity to shop the Brimfield Antique Show surfaces.  There are two ways to do this, first being go early with the professional buyers or go at the end of the show when dealers are looking to unload. No matter which one you chose, remember to drive a truck or at the very least a van.

TIGER LILY’S TIP #1: Have the Right Transportation & Fill-up Local

IMG_6576

BUSIN’ TO BRIMFIELD
http://www.brimfieldshow.com

Here’s the link to the show,http://www.brimfieldshow.com. For city dwellers and swanky suburbanites, the location borders on the outer-bounds. I mean this in the nicest way. An area gas station, promotes the gun club with a bang and the gas prices brought me back a year or two.

TIGER LILY’S TIP #2 Bring Cash

We went on the last day on our September visit with cash. The best reason to have cash is it opens the negotiations. It also sets your budget. Once you are out, your out.  Everyone wants to get the best value when they are at show or buying spec items. The trick is to stay with in a 20% margin. If you start acting tough and throw ridiculously cheap numbers at the dealers, you not only will insult but make for a wasted day where you don’t end up with anything.

BARGAINING AT BRIMFIELD
BRING CASH

BEFORE:

The other point to bargaining in Brimfield is to look for a piece that you think is a bit of challenge. The stuff no-one likes to touch is usually what I gravitate toward. The beauty of preserving the artisan trade of upholstery at http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com is that we can revitalize any old piece. In the end, I paid $15.00 for this vintage barber’s chair. My negotiating tactics were largely based on the condition of the piece and that I had the transportation to cart the chair home.

BEFORE
BARBER’S CHAIR
NEEDS A FRESH UP-DO

AFTER:

I wanted to keep the look of the barber’s chair consistent with what was existing from its 1930s frame. While the initial frame was cheap, the rebirth was an investment. I think the tip here is that when you buy something at a low price point, you have to love it enough to spend a significant amount more then the purchasing price to get it back to its prime. I think we accomplished that.

REUPHOLSTERED HONORING VINTAGE STYLE
BUY ME: $1,395.00
http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com

I sat in the chair and spun it around.  It’s like a little time machine. I thought about style, period and what makes something great at any age.
Coco Chanel says, “A style does not go out of style as long as it adapts itself to its period. When there is an incompatibility between the style and a certain state of mind, it is never the style that triumphs.”

HGTV aired, Tiger Lily’s approved! We love being part of Lara Spencer’s ” I Brake For Yard Sales,” team and watched like all the other viewers as the pieces we helped put together came to life in the homes of two deserving families on the debut episode friday Oct. 4th. If you didn’t see it, watch for repeats!  Lara coined me the “fabric guru” which actually made me laugh because I can recall pouring over prints and colors in a bid to bring what’s old back to new again. So here it goes:

BEFORE:

We started with the family’s wood framed, french styled bergere chair. They were well-worn and featured the original and at one time popular silk check with a goldish faux wood finish. The pair had a loose cushion and loose back.

IMG_6462

BEFORE:
TRADITIONAL CHAIRS IN ORIGINAL FABRIC

We decided on a neutral print for new upholstery. I especially liked the concept of bringing a print into a room for this family.  Husband and wife were looking for a neutral palette to  create a new classic look that could go the distance as styles and trends change. The ferns were a perfect pick to satisfy all the points on our check list.

Image

NEW FABRIC
NEW LOOK

To save on the expense of the fabric, we changed the back of the chair to be a tight back. This new look came out of the consideration to save some cost on the price of fabric but also added decorative value.  The beauty of bringing a older piece to our workroom, http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com, is that we can make small changes to existing pieces that are not only decorative but cost effective.

Image

CHANGED TIGHT BACK
FRAME WHITE WASHED

We left the seat cushion alone and worked with the existing fabric to make a matching border on the seat. The entire frame is finished with a fresh white wash to remove all the dated golden hues that were once a focal point of the chair.

LOOSE SEAT CUSHION
ADDS COMFORT

AFTER:

The outcome is remarkable. We were able to transform what looked like a tired and dated living room chair to one that was inviting and fresh both in color and print. The reveal on this one is ten times more exciting on the show “I Brake For Yard Sales.”

A BENCH WITH A STORY TO TELL

It’s called I Brake for Yard Sales but we are really all about the repairs. With Lara Spencer at the lead of the design team we are always looking for old pieces that can become new again.  Tiger Lily’s and our custom workroom @ http://www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com is the perfect partner for the “I Brake” team.

BEFORE:
FOUND OLD & UNSTUFFED

We found this bench at an antique center in Black Rock, CT. The attraction is all in the legs. This girl’s got legs and knows how to use them! I loved the carving of the ball & claw legs. Anytime you can find a piece with carved legs and an existing paint finish, you know that you have a great launching point to create a distressed finish.

IMG_6326

SHE HAD THE GREATEST LEGS
THEY NEEDED TO BE GLUED!

The first step in working on the legs of this little guy was to glue the base. The age is evident everywhere with this old guy.

Beneath layers of fabric, old batting and horse hair fill, the frame while weak was in tact.

IMG_6328

NEW FOAM & BATTING RECREATES ORIGINAL SHAPE

We were able to strip down to the bones, add new webbing and foam to recreate the original shape of the frame.

When it comes to selecting fabric for SMALL pieces, my tip is always to go BIG. I favor prints and patterns that can make the piece look bigger in a space, while not measuring near the commitment of a sofa or a club chair.

IMG_6349

UPHOLSTERED IN WHIMSY TOILE

Here we used a vintage whimsical toile that featured a kitten motif. It is playful, crisp and has a story to tell.

IMG_6340

LOOK FOR SMALL PIECES TO MAKE BIG IMPACT

The finished piece was welted with a red solid to compliment the hues in the pattern. It transformed into the perfect piece for the Riverside family with three young girls, that we hope will share memories with their three young girls sitting right on this bench.

THE FIVE FABRIC RULE

SHOOT: I BREAK FOR YARD SALES
HGTV

It goes without saying that I stand for the personal touch in interior design, the use of decorator fabrics to complete the transition from the “Before” to the “After” when it comes to reupholstery, custom drapery, custom furniture, custom bedding and pillows at Tiger Lilys (www.tigerlilysgreenwich.com)

I am excited to be sharing my tips of the trade when it comes to how to use designer fabrics with my amazing friend and design collaborator Lara Spencer. The author of her own best selling book, “I Break For Yard Sales,” Lara is bring the show to HGTV for the fall season.  We shot the pilot a while back.

In total excitement, I start this letter to the team. There is so much to be proud of, I will pick a few instances to begin:

We secured a placement in New England Home Magazine. The article comes out on the 27th.

We strengthened and defined our brand further. Under the statement of “Hand Made, American, Artisan Crafted” we have successfully conceived,  produced or sampled 17 original furniture products. We have designed and created 13 pillow ideas and the umbrella sub-collection of Say It Loud.
Image
We created  five blankets to go into the collection as well. All this has been done in artistic form true to our personal mission. Our collection is not Big Box. We are unique in our perspective and our ability to produce a collection in keeping with the historic them of collections, as seen in runway shows. Our pieces all work off each other. Incorporating natural fibers like cow-hides, sheep pelts and mixes them with lucite, metal, bolts, zippers we celebrate these combinations in design.

Special thanks include: Bob for tirelessly working on product development while juggling client projects (POWER) BK providing innovative ideas, questioning product development and working internally with clients to allow my energies to focus(LOVE). Laura for pushing through sickness, remaining dedicated, providing professional quality tear sheets (DEDICATION). The back for staying open minded and making alternations.

We made imaging a priority this week with the professional photo shoot, team biographies, photography in three special residential homes, created tear sheets for our products in photoshop for clarity, we looked into new invoicing system.

We brought Nick on board. Nick is young, ambitious and willing to learn. I envision him playing a role in financial development of the company. His goal will be to target growth opportunities and provide valuable feedback on the feasibility of those new opportunities based on date & research.

We were approached by an additional web-market, Mix Century- A New Vintage Marketplace. Consider the importance of this step in our growth. A launching company has identified our product as a valuable asset to their marketplace. We have a brand identity and one that has value to vendors. That is HUGE HUGE HUGE!

We appeared on HGTV on Lara Spencer’s Flea Market Finds special. That alone lead to five phone calls reaching as far as Alaska. That is our reach folks, across the United States. We reach audiences in markets where we have never step foot, never breathed the air, never saw the sun set. These clients feel us close enough to make a connection. That is a powerful thought.

adhds_main_pic_solo

We go into this week with the AD Home Show on the horizon. YAHOO!!! Honestly, smile, big & deep, feel proud, feel accomplished. This is the moment. Let us seize it! May our good fortune that we have now hug us tight at this show.It is happening for a reason.
